Cheryl Truman and Charles Bertram introduced Zach in the Herald Leader on May 4, 2008. It was a heart-touching story with some incredible images of Zach and our family. It has been a pleasure to meet Cheryl and Charles and we know we have met lifelong friends.
One of a kind is what everybody says their baby is. Fifteen-month-old Zach Pickard is one in eight million. Zach was diagnosed in December 2007 with progeria, a genetic disease that causes premature aging. This is the first in an occasional series of articles about how Zach and his family cope with the disease.
Zach Pickard has one of the rarest diseases on earth. But this cruel, random twist of genetics does not mean he has a sad life. He is a 15-month-old boy, a child who babbles and runs and is fond of his nap mat at day care. He is surrounded by people who love him like they love nothing else. Says his mother, Tina: “We want this to be a story of hope.” Zach’s life, she thinks, is about the possibility of miracles.
